Character Development: ☆☆☆
"Evelyn can remember all her past lives. She can also remember that in every single one, she's been killed before her eighteenth birthday by Arden, a supernatural being whose soul is tethered to hers. And it doesn't matter whether she kills them first - they both die.The problem is that she's quite fond of the life she's in now, and more importantly, her sister needs her to stay alive for bone marrow transplants. So now Evelyn has to: a. find the centuries-old enemy who hunts her through each life and break their curse for good, b. figure out exactly why she's being hunted in the first place, and c. try quite hard not to fall in love with them. Again."
Whew, finished this mystery book yesterday, just in time to write this review! Let's see...this book alternates between Evelyn's present life and her past lives, and this turned out to be a great choice because cutting back and forth built up the tension in the perfect way and kept me hooked for probably far longer than it should have. I thought the mystery of why Arden has connected to her and apparently had to kill her before she turned eighteen was compelling, the only problem was that we got no answers.
The past lives kept things interesting but didn't provide any driving information, and instead of giving bits of information as the story progressed, the entire reveal was saved until the last few chapters. Had the reveal been a mind-blowing, earth-shattering affair, I could have overlooked keeping readers in the dark for the entire book. Alas, I found it lukewarm at best, and the final solve ended up being equally mid. Overall, I found the first roughly half of the book compelling enough that the mediocre ending didn't make me terribly upset, but it was kind of a bummer ending to an otherwise pretty solid book.
